Southern Highlands NSW Weddings

Why the Southern Highlands Draws Couples From Across NSW

The Southern Highlands sits about 90 minutes south of Sydney and 45 minutes from Wollongong. For couples who want the atmosphere of a country wedding without the logistical burden of a long destination trip, it hits the right balance. Bowral has a main street of heritage sandstone buildings, antique shops and good restaurants. Mittagong has old industrial character and a growing hospitality scene. Moss Vale is quieter, leafy and home to some of the most beautiful private garden estates in NSW. Robertson, up on the plateau, is a different experience again, with dairy farms, cool mist and a kind of dramatic landscape you do not find elsewhere in the state.

Chris has been officiating Southern Highlands ceremonies for many years. He arrives knowing the estate layouts, knowing which garden spots catch the afternoon light in March and which reception rooms suit an intimate 40-person dinner versus a 150-person party. He talks directly with venue coordinators during planning so nothing falls through the gaps. When ceremony timing needs to flex for a florist running late or a photographer who wants another five minutes in the garden, Chris and the team adjust without anyone in the room noticing.

The Highlands attracts a particular kind of couple. They tend to have thought carefully about their day. They want an officiant who reflects their taste, not one reading from a script he used three weeks ago at a different venue. Chris writes every ceremony from scratch, using the specific details of how you met, what you value, and what you actually want your guests to hear. The result is a ceremony that feels singular to your relationship rather than assembled from stock phrases.

Four-season weddings in the Highlands look genuinely different from one another. Autumn from March through May is the most popular period, when the deciduous trees in Bowral and along the Hume Highway corridor turn amber and gold. Spring from September through November brings garden blooms and longer evenings. Summer weddings take advantage of warm Highlands nights and outdoor receptions. Winter weddings in the Highlands are uncommon but striking, with log fires and a different sense of intimacy. Chris has officiated in all four seasons and adapts ceremony length and positioning to suit the conditions.

For couples booking a full entertainment package, the Celebrant plus DJ and MC package starts from $2,990. This bundles everything under one team with one point of contact, saving $510 compared to booking separately. Chris acts as both MC and celebrant for the early part of the day, then hands the floor to the DJ for the reception. The coordination between ceremony and reception is tighter than any multi-vendor arrangement because everyone involved already knows each other and the run sheet.

The Ceremony Experience

How a Southern Highlands Ceremony Works With Chris

From first contact to walking away married, here is how Chris runs the process for Southern Highlands weddings.

Initial consultation

In person or via video call. Chris learns your story, your preferences and the venue. If you are based in Sydney and the wedding is at a Bowral estate, video works fine.

Notice of Intended Marriage

Lodged at least one month before the ceremony. This is a legal requirement for all Australian marriages. Chris manages the paperwork and timing so nothing slips through.

Custom ceremony script written

Shared with you before the day. You review it, request changes and give final approval. No surprises on the day.

Venue coordinator contact

Chris contacts the venue coordinator directly before the day. At major Highlands estates this is standard practice. Run sheets, access times and positioning are confirmed in advance.

Arrives early, checks everything

Chris is at the venue at least 30 minutes before guests. He checks the PA, briefs the wedding party, confirms the order of proceedings and makes sure everyone is in position before the ceremony starts.

Cultural and family traditions included

If you have family rituals, cultural elements or specific readings that matter, they go in. Chris has included unity candle ceremonies, handfasting, bilingual readings and family tributes at Highland ceremonies.

Certificates and registration

Signed and witnessed on the day. Lodged with the registry by Chris after the ceremony. Your commemorative certificate is presented to you before guests head to the reception.

Package option to add DJ and MC

The Celebrant plus DJ and MC package from $2,990 keeps the whole day under one team. One contact, one invoice, zero vendor miscommunication.

Where We Work

Popular Venues We've Worked At in the Southern Highlands

Chris has officiated at ceremonies across the full Southern Highlands region, from established estate venues to private properties with character all their own. Bendooley Estate at Berrima is one of the most sought-after Highlands venues, with its stone winery building, expansive gardens and award-winning restaurant attached. Joadja Winery at Mittagong offers outdoor ceremony spaces surrounded by vines, with the historic Joadja village ruins adding a layer of atmosphere few venues can match. Peppers Manor House at Sutton Forest is one of the grandest properties in the Highlands, with formal gardens and interiors that suit elaborate ceremonies of any size. Centennial Vineyards in Bowral is a working winery with a beautiful function space and regular ceremony garden bookings throughout the autumn and spring seasons. Milton Park Country House at Bowral is a heritage listed property with impeccably kept grounds and one of the most dramatic country house settings in the NSW Southern Highlands. Cooks Hill Galleries in the Bowral township offers a more intimate art-focused space for smaller ceremonies and receptions. Briars Country Lodge at Moss Vale is a refined property with garden ceremony options and a reputation for personal service that matches well with the Party Central approach. Chris is always happy to work at a venue he has not been to before and will visit or call ahead to make sure everything is in order before your day.

Common Questions

Southern Highlands Wedding Celebrant FAQs

Do you travel to Bowral and the Southern Highlands from Wollongong?
Yes. Wollongong to Bowral is roughly 45 minutes via Macquarie Pass or the Hume Highway. Chris is familiar with every major Highland venue and travels to Bowral, Mittagong, Moss Vale, Berrima, Robertson, Bundanoon and Sutton Forest. Travel costs are included for most Southern Highlands locations. Ask when you enquire and Chris will confirm.
What time of year is best for a Southern Highlands wedding?
Autumn from March through May is the most popular season in the Highlands, and for good reason. The deciduous trees around Bowral and along the Hume corridor turn deep red and gold, and the light in the afternoons is genuinely beautiful. Spring from September through November is the second most popular period, when the garden estates are in full bloom. Summer is warm with long evenings. Winter weddings are less common but some couples love the intimate atmosphere of log fires and a smaller gathering. Dates from September through May fill early, so book well ahead.
Can we have an outdoor ceremony at a Southern Highlands winery?
Yes. Joadja Winery at Mittagong and Centennial Vineyards in Bowral both have dedicated outdoor ceremony spaces. Other wineries in the region offer garden setups by arrangement. Chris has worked at these venues and knows the ceremony positions that photograph best and stay out of the prevailing afternoon wind. For any outdoor Highlands venue, a weather backup is strongly recommended given the region's tendency toward afternoon showers in summer and cold winds in winter.
What's your ceremony style: formal or relaxed?
Completely tailored to the couple. Some Southern Highlands ceremonies are very formal, particularly those held in the heritage rooms at Milton Park or the grand spaces at Peppers Manor House. Others are relaxed and personal, full of laughter and specific stories about the couple. Chris has delivered all versions and adapts his tone, pacing and delivery to match what you ask for. He will ask you directly during the planning session and write accordingly.
How do you handle ceremony timing with venue coordinators?
Chris contacts the venue coordinator directly before the day, typically a week out and again the day before. He confirms access times, ceremony positioning, the run sheet sequence and any venue-specific requirements. At busy Highlands estates where multiple weddings may be on the property, this communication is particularly important. Chris attends or calls ahead for the site visit when possible to see the space before the day.
What documentation do I need for a Southern Highlands wedding?
You need to complete a Notice of Intended Marriage, provide proof of identity (passport or birth certificate) and sign a Declaration of No Legal Impediment on the day of the ceremony. If either party has been previously married, additional documents relating to the end of that marriage are required. Chris walks you through all of this during the initial consultation and tells you exactly what to prepare and when.
Do you do late-notice weddings in the Southern Highlands?
Short-notice requests are considered depending on date availability. The legal minimum is one calendar month between lodging the Notice of Intended Marriage and the ceremony date. This cannot be shortened without a court order. Within that legal constraint, Chris will do his best to accommodate requests that come in close to the date. Call directly on 0405 146 271 for urgent enquiries.
Can we incorporate our cultural or family traditions into the ceremony?
Yes, always. Chris actively asks during the planning consultation what traditions or rituals matter to you and your family. Handfasting, unity ceremonies, bilingual readings, family tributes, cultural prayers and specific music cues are all things he has worked with at Southern Highlands ceremonies. If it matters to you, tell him and it goes in the ceremony.
How far in advance should we book our wedding celebrant?
As soon as your date is set. Chris takes one ceremony per day, and the Southern Highlands weekends across October to April are usually booked out six to twelve months ahead. A 25% deposit secures your date.
Can we write our own vows or ceremony script?
Yes. Chris builds every ceremony around your story rather than a generic template, whether that means your own vows word for word, a script he drafts with you, or a mix of both.
