South Coast NSW Weddings

Why Couples Choose the South Coast for Their Wedding

The South Coast of NSW stretches from Kiama down through Nowra, Berry, Huskisson and Jervis Bay all the way to Ulladulla and Batemans Bay. It is one of the most naturally beautiful regions in Australia, with white sand beaches, national park bushland, tidal estuaries and rolling green farmland sitting side by side. Couples who want to get married somewhere genuinely memorable, without spending an hour on a motorway out of Sydney, come here in their hundreds every year.

Chris Lee has been officiating ceremonies across the South Coast and Shoalhaven for many years. He knows Huskisson Beach in the morning light, the garden lawns at Coolangatta Estate in autumn, the timber pavilions tucked into the bush near Jervis Bay and the heritage homesteads outside Berry. That local knowledge shows up in how he plans your ceremony. He advises on where to position guests relative to the afternoon sun, what time the wind picks up at a given beach, and which backup locations work best when the weather does not cooperate.

Every ceremony Chris writes is original; he doesn't recycle scripts. During planning meetings he interviews couples in detail, asking how they met, what matters to them, and what they absolutely don't want said in front of their guests. The ceremony that comes out the other end sounds recognisably like you.

South Coast weddings often involve guests who travel from Sydney, Canberra or Melbourne and stay the weekend, and that changes the atmosphere. People arrive relaxed. They have time for a beach walk the morning of the ceremony, a long lunch at a local winery, and a reception that runs until the stars come out. Chris writes ceremonies to suit that pacing, with its own rhythm rather than Sydney timing shifted 150 kilometres south.

Chris holds a current registration as an authorised marriage celebrant under the Marriage Act 1961. He handles all the legal paperwork, including the Notice of Intended Marriage, the Declaration of No Legal Impediment and the official marriage certificates. You sign everything before the ceremony, and by the time your guests head to the reception, you are legally married with documents that are already in order.

The Ceremony Experience

What a South Coast Ceremony With Chris Looks Like

From the first planning call to the moment you walk away married, here is how it works.

Initial planning consultation

Chris meets with you (in person or via video call) to understand your story, your tone and what you want your ceremony to say about you both.

Legal paperwork handled

Notice of Intended Marriage lodged at least one month before the ceremony. Declaration of No Legal Impediment signed on the day. Certificates registered after.

Custom ceremony script

Written specifically for you and shared for review before the day. You can request changes, add readings, include rituals or keep it simple. Your call.

Rehearsal option

For beach or outdoor South Coast ceremonies where timing and positioning matter, a rehearsal walk-through takes the guesswork out of the day.

Arrives early, sets up quietly

Chris arrives at least 30 minutes before guests to check positioning, confirm sound levels if a PA is involved, and brief any readers or wedding party members.

Weather backup planning

Chris discusses outdoor contingency options during planning. For South Coast beach and garden ceremonies, having a named indoor fallback is always recommended.

Elopements and micro-weddings

Jervis Bay elopements are a Party Central specialty. If you want two witnesses and a ceremony on the sand at sunrise, Chris can make that happen with the full legal backing.

Certificate and registration

Your official marriage certificates are signed, witnessed and lodged with the registry on your behalf. You receive your commemorative certificate on the day.

Where We Work

Popular Venues We've Worked At: South Coast NSW

Chris has officiated at ceremonies right across the South Coast, from intimate garden settings to sweeping beachfront locations. Bangalee Reserve in Nowra offers a beautiful open-air setting along the Shoalhaven River for ceremonies of any size. Paperbark Camp near Jervis Bay is one of the most requested locations on the South Coast, where couples marry under a canopy of paperbark trees with the sounds of the bush all around them. Huskisson Beach itself is a longtime favourite for couples who want soft white sand and calm blue water as their backdrop, with the Jervis Bay Marine Park providing a natural frame that no marquee can compete with. The lookout area near Sea Cliff Bridge at Kiama offers dramatic coastal views that make for extraordinary ceremony photos. Fig & Olive in Berry hosts garden weddings in its grounds and the historic Berry streetscape provides a wonderful setting for photos. Coolangatta Estate on the Shoalhaven River is one of the region's oldest working farms turned wedding venue, with a magnificent homestead and established gardens. Bangalay Luxury Villas at Shoalhaven Heads sits right beside the beach and offers both ceremony lawns and sheltered indoor backups. Roslyn Estate near Berry is a working winery with open garden spaces and rustic character that suits couples after something a little different from the standard reception centre. Chris has worked at all of these venues and many more across the South Coast, and he is always happy to visit a location he has not been to before.

Common Questions

South Coast Wedding Celebrant FAQs

Do you travel to Nowra and Jervis Bay?
Yes. The entire Shoalhaven and surrounding South Coast area is covered, including Nowra, Jervis Bay, Huskisson, Sussex Inlet, Vincentia, Hyams Beach and beyond. Travel is included for most South Coast locations. For venues further south toward Ulladulla and Batemans Bay, a small travel allowance may apply. Just ask when you enquire.
Can we have a beach ceremony on the South Coast?
Yes. Huskisson Beach, Jervis Bay, Mollymook, Collingwood Beach at Vincentia and a number of other South Coast beaches are popular spots for legal ceremonies. Some locations within the Jervis Bay National Park require a permit from the National Parks and Wildlife Service. Chris advises on this during the planning process and can point you toward the right contacts to get the permit sorted.
What's the notice period required by law for a South Coast wedding?
By law, the Notice of Intended Marriage must be lodged at least one month before the ceremony date. This applies to all marriages in Australia, including South Coast weddings. In very limited special circumstances, a judge or magistrate can authorise a shorter notice period, but these cases are rare. Chris guides you through the timing so nothing is missed.
Can Chris write the ceremony from scratch?
Yes, every ceremony is written from scratch. There are no templates or recycled scripts. Chris spends time with each couple learning their story, their sense of humour, their values and what they want their guests to feel during the ceremony. The draft is shared with you before the day for review and you can request any changes you like.
How many people can attend an outdoor South Coast ceremony?
There is no legal limit on guest numbers for an outdoor ceremony. The practical limit depends on the venue itself, any permits attached to the location, and the sound setup you have in place. Chris has officiated at outdoor South Coast ceremonies with fewer than 10 guests and more than 200. He advises on what works for each location.
What happens if the weather turns on the day?
A backup plan matters here, and it's one of the first things Chris raises when planning your outdoor ceremony. He helps you pick a named indoor or sheltered fallback and agrees in advance what weather triggers the move. On the day, he watches the forecast and talks to you and your venue coordinator early, so nothing turns into a last-minute scramble.
How much does a South Coast wedding celebrant cost?
The Celebrant, DJ and MC Package starts from $2,990 for the full trio, compared to $3,500 if each service is booked separately. A standalone celebrant booking is also available. Pricing depends on your date, location and ceremony requirements. Use the contact form or call 0405 146 271 for a personalised quote. Chris responds the same day.
Is Chris available for elopements and micro-weddings on the South Coast?
Yes, and Jervis Bay elopements are a Party Central specialty. Whether it's two witnesses on the beach at sunrise or a 20-person ceremony in a private garden, Chris brings the same preparation and care to both. The legal requirements are identical, and the ceremony writing is just as personal either way.
How far in advance should we book our wedding celebrant?
As soon as your date is set. Chris takes one ceremony per day, and the South Coast weekends across October to April are usually booked out six to twelve months ahead. A 25% deposit secures your date.
Can we write our own vows or ceremony script?
Yes. Chris builds every ceremony around your story, not a generic template, whether that means your own vows word for word, a script he drafts with you, or a mix of both.

How do I choose a wedding celebrant on the South Coast?

Start by meeting the celebrant in person or on Zoom — chemistry matters more than price. Ask how many weddings they've performed (Chris has done 200+), whether they write custom ceremonies, how they handle the legal paperwork (NOIM), and whether they'll attend a rehearsal. The best South Coast celebrants know the local venues and can advise on ceremony timing for light and weather.
