Dry ice: the dancing-on-clouds shot
Most couples have already seen this one and want it. A low, dense white cloud sits on the floor and the two of you appear to dance on top of it.
How it works
Solid carbon dioxide drops into heated water and produces a heavy fog that hugs the floor instead of rising. That is the difference from a standard smoke machine, which throws light haze upward, trips smoke alarms and flattens the photos.
What it suits
First dances. It is a photographic effect and it peaks in one well-lit, well-timed moment.
Before you book it
- The cloud stays dense for a limited window, which is why cueing it to the bar of the song matters.
- It needs still air. Outdoors, or in a marquee with the sides open, wind pulls it apart.
- The floor gets damp. Worth knowing on polished timber.
- It leaves smoke detectors alone, unlike haze machines, which is why venues tend to be comfortable with it.
Cold sparks: the big one, with conditions
Cold spark machines throw a fountain of bright sparks several metres up. They read as indoor fireworks and they make guests put their drinks down.
Why "cold"
No flame, no explosive charge, no gunpowder. The machine heats a granular metallic powder to make a spark that cools on contact, which is what allows indoor use at close range where real fireworks never could.
That distinction matters when you talk to venues. Told your venue bans "fireworks"? Ask specifically about cold spark machines. The answer often changes.
Where they land
- Grand entrance into the reception
- First dance, as a build at the key moment rather than through the whole song
- Cake cutting
- Last song, as a finish
The conditions
- Ceiling height. The effect needs vertical clearance. A low room limits how high the machines run, which changes the look.
- Venue approval, in writing, every time. A supplier who says approval is unnecessary is a supplier to avoid.
- A licensed operator on site. Not a set-and-forget effect.
- Clearance around the units, which the operator manages on the night.

CO2 cannons: energy, not photos
CO2 cannons fire a sharp, loud burst of white vapour. Nightclub effect, and it behaves like one.
CO2 buys you energy, not imagery. The burst is fast and loud. It lifts a dance floor at the moment the beat drops. You will not frame the photo.
Good use
- Peak dance floor moments later in the night
- Bridal party entrances where you want noise
- Corporate events and parties with a younger crowd
Poor use
- Ceremonies. It has been asked.
- First dances, unless you want a high-energy one rather than a romantic one.
- Rooms with small children close to the floor. The noise startles them.
Treat CO2 as punctuation. Twice in a night works. Eight times and it turns into wallpaper.
Indoor sparklers
Indoor sparkler fountains are smaller, lower units that sit on or near the floor and give a contained spark effect. The subtler cousin of cold sparks.
They work flanking a cake table, lining an entrance, or framing a first dance in a room where full-height cold sparks won't fit. Low ceiling? This is usually the effect that solves it.
Same rules apply: venue approval, a trained operator, clearance around the units.
Timing separates good FX from wasted money
Every effect here is a timing effect. The machines are not the hard part.
Dry ice released four seconds late means the cloud arrives after the shot. Cold sparks on the wrong bar feel arbitrary instead of climactic. CO2 at a random point is noise.
Which is why the person operating the effects and the person running the music being the same team changes the result. When your DJ cues the FX, the effect lands on the beat, because whoever presses the button already knows where the song goes next.
Split the two across separate vendors and someone has to call the cue over a headset or a hand signal. The margin for error widens. It is a small structural difference that shows up in the video.
A sensible shortlist
Choosing from scratch, this order gives you the best return.
- Dry ice for the first dance. Highest photographic payoff, lowest risk, almost always approved.
- Cold sparks for the entrance or the finish. Biggest visual impact of the four, subject to ceiling height and venue sign-off.
- CO2 for one or two dance floor peaks. Only if your crowd is up for it.
- Indoor sparklers where the room won't take full cold sparks, or to frame the cake.
Combining works, as long as each effect does a distinct job at a distinct moment. Two effects used precisely beat four used on repeat.

The venue conversation, early
Have this when you book the venue, not a fortnight before the wedding.
- Ask about cold spark machines by name, not "fireworks" or "pyro". Different things, different answers.
- Ask the ceiling height of the room you will be in.
- Ask what documentation they need from the supplier, and send it early.
- Heritage building or marquee? Expect more restrictions and plan around them.
